Package: release-notes

Hello release notes maintainers,

Please include the following notes to the etch release notes. People,
who are upgrading systems over a wpa secured link will need to do some
manual configuration to not loose their connectivity. We had many confused
users in the past, which filed bugs like #360387 and #365613.

These notes are taken and adapted from our our wiki pages. However, I
think that a paragraph in the release notes are a more appropriate place
for this. Here we go:

Trouble when using WPA secured wireless networks

In sarge, the wpasupplicant package was configured as system
service. This means that you have to edit wpasupplicant parameters like
the interface to be managed the driver backend to
/etc/default/wpasupplicant, and provide a suitable
/etc/wpasupplicant.conf yourself.

In etch, the system service /etc/init.d/wpasupplicant was dropped. The
debian package provides integration to /etc/network/interfaces just like
the wireless-tools package. This means the wpasupplicant package does no
longer provide a system service wpasupplicant itself!

For information how to configure wpasupplicant please refer to
README.modes [1], which gives examples for /etc/network/interfaces
files. Updated Information about the usage of the wpasupplicant package
in debian can be found in the debian wiki at [2]

Optionally, you might consider this part for madwifi users:

Trouble when using wpa with atheros based chipset:

The wpasupplicant package in debian 4.0 supports only the so called
"madwifi-ng" version of madwifi. Please read [3]
/usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/NEWS.Debian.gz in the for information on
how to enable support for madwifi-old. Please also visit the debian
pages on the madwifi.org wiki [4] for information on where to obtain
madwifi drivers and support for its use on Debian. The people to consult
are mentioned here.
