I rather think that we should provide all 3 modes of operation in the
next upload of wpasupplicant_0.4.8-1, because looking at this bugreport,
the package seems broken to me. 

Mode3 is effectively reinstantiating the behaviour of
wpasupplicant_0.4.7-3, and the other modes are Kel's work. They need to
be configure in /e/n/i anyway, so I don't see much risk of breaking
something.

I will test them on monday (when I get to the internet cafe where we use
wpa) and report bug how this works for me.
