Take a look at Md's maintainer scripts for udev, he uses "echo" for some 
important informational messages :-)

I agree with you Reinhard, that debconf would be overkill here (again I 
cannot substantiate that, but neither can I make an argument TO use it 
as the preferred warning mechanism). Leaving /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf 
intact if its been modified would go a long way to making the transition 
a bit smoother.
