And just to update this monologue:

The above source package has been hacked on quite a bit, mostly to properly 
expose the D-Bus interface. It needs vigourous testing (especially on Ubuntu) 
which probaby deserves a bit of discussion.

It would be nice to see it in experimental for wider developer exposure.
