3.2 was sufficient for IBSS RSN with iwl3945, that's what i used. I know
that more recent kernel add IBSS RSN support to more devices.
As for P2P, i'm not sure if it is supported for my cards; with iw phy,
one of them says it supports P2P frames for tx and rx but the other one
only support it for rx. And none of them has P2P in the supported
interface modes. A patch from Johannes Berg[1] suggest that only iwl3945
with PAN support may do P2P,
but one of my two card doesn't have PAN support. So it feels like i will
never be able to do P2P with these two cards.
