/sys/class/net/$IFACE/phy80211 exists only for mac80211/ nl80211 based
drivers, legacy kernel modules not using nl80211 (e.g. ipw2x00 or the
various staging drivers, among others) do not create this directory.
Furthermore wpa_supplicant can be used for wired interfaces, like
ethernet, as well - it's not very common, but some enterprise setups
do run IEEE8021X on their managed switches and make clients use this.
