The error is limited to kfreebsd.  Running with -dd produces a stream
of of the same error message

$ wpa_supplicant -dd -i wlan0 -c wpa.conf
[...]
Invalid routing message version=173
[...]

which comes from src/drivers/driver_bsd.c, hence only kfreebsd.  With
ifupdown installed the routing message version=5.  It haven't tracked
down yet why the presence of ifupdown changes this.
