You can use a remote xserver, thus recommended would be too close
dependency IMO.
Moreover it would not prevent anyone from installing an X server and
starting a graphical application from console which seemed to happen in
the reported case.
Depending on a login manager OTOH would be too much again, so I think it
is already easy enough to figure out that an X server is needed to start
XBMC.
