The passthrough issue has been fixed since Gotham though as it can now
properly speak pulse. I didn't check the details of the xbmc code, but
ofcourse it would be nice if it could use pulseaudio when pulseaudio is
running and otherwise fall back to ALSA.

If you use XBMC in a standalone HTPC setup, pulseaudio does not really
add much so using just alsa there is fine.. When your box also runs a
desktop environment, typically it will run pulseaudio so the pulseaudio
sink is quite helpful there.

I've done that ages ago, yielded exactly no help, people tend to prefer
complaining and ranting about pulseaudio instead of triaging bugs.
Ofcourse feel free to help out, there is quite a bit of bug triaging to
be done which i have little time for :)
