This perhaps isn't really an etch thing either though if it works I'd be
tempted to ship it.  But I think you've misunderstood me.  I meant
specifying the PNG to load at runtime.

I don't really like the idea of entirely replacing the mice engine but
the alternative (patching the configure.ac/makefile.in etc and
regenerating) isn't very attractive either.

Sorry, there's no easy win here.
