Can you check after a crash if there are any errors in
~/.xsession-errors please?

Also is compositing turned on (i.e. do you get transparency in your
panel etc)?  You can check by right clicking on a blank bit of panel and
choosing customize panel.  If you have an option "Transparency" then you
have compositing enabled.
