The previous clock plugin was using xfcalendar, the current one isn't.
That's all, and I guess it won't be changed. Newcomers which haven't
used clock plugin in 4.2 (i was using datetime, for example) won't
expects the behavior your describing, I guess.
But anyway, the systray icon is a workaround, and 4.4B2 will have an
orage plugin which, I guess, will provide the behavior you want.
