i am using an lcd, and think that medium hinting looks better.  and
the gnome people seem to agree enough to make it the default, so maybe
they know something more or maybe they just haven't really put too
much thought into it.

i'm not sure this should be closed right away.  maybe this should be
forwarded to the freedesktop standards people to see if it makes sense
to make a common font hinting default across desktop environments.
