Hmhm, yeah, I can understand the problem. I don't use xfapplet plugin at
all so I can't really tell if it happens there. As xfapplet is a gnome
alien in Xfce panel, there may be reasons for this.

If you kill the panel, do you reproduce this?

Anyway, I've reported this upstream, stay tuned.
