The problem was an incompatibility between the "Save session for future 
login" checkbox in the Logout window and xfce4-session.rc. If that 
checkbox is checked while "SaveOnExit=false" is set in  
~/.config/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc then when any of the buttons in 
the Logout window is clicked xfce4-session suspends and the desired 
action hangs.

Unchecking the "Save session for future login" checkbox resolves the 
problem. Does this need a patch or some kind of warning?
