Yes, it's related to the double click speed. I just set it to 200ms.  
Maximizing works by double-clicking with the laptop mouse buttons. With my  
usb-mouse however I windows don't maximize even if I double-click much  
faster than with my internal mouse. I used xev to verify that the double  
clicks by the usb mouse are properly received.
