Over the past week or so I have been trying to troubleshoot an issue. My
typical installation of XFCE had been from installing a base system and
then installing the xfce4 and xfce4-goodies packages.
When I started my testing on squeeze I noticed that many icons,
including all the icons that would be associated with a .directory and
xfce4-settings-manager were missing.
I figured out that this was due to no default icon set being chosen (I
am guessing hicolor is default?). I then went on to test a squeeze
installation with desktop=xfce. This was exactly as expected with no
I went back to the squeeze install that used packages ran a strace on
the settings manager. I found that it set the user's icon settings in
~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xsettings.xml. I found the
global setting at /etc/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xsettings.xml
has the icon theme "Rodent".
When I went back to the desktop=xfce installation I expected this file
to show "Tango", but this was not the case. It actually appears to be
using the GNOME icon set although none are set. The
/etc/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xsettings.xml file still shows
rodent and the user specific settings show: IconThemeName type="empty".
Where is the icons being set in this case? Why is GNOME the default
instead of Tango? Is this intended? Should this be documented in some way?
