Okay, I switched back from XDM to LightDM on 09/02. I started seeing the
Init ID "co" respawning too fast warnings right away at logout /
shutdown / restart, and they escalated, but I didn't get to any point of
failure on that day. The following morning there were a number of
updates for testing, among them some C libraries and an acpid update.
Since that time, the AMD64 systems are not creating the huge
.xsession-error files I was seeing. The .xsession-error file is now just
a few hundred bytes in each session, and contains this pair of entries:

(xfce4-sensors-plugin:2650): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_dir_read_name:
assertion `dir != NULL' failed

(xfce4-sensors-plugin:2650): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_dir_close: assertion
`dir != NULL' failed
xscreensaver-command: activating and locking.

I must have something misconfigured there?

The Init ID "co" respawning too fast errors continue to be seen when
ending a session, and the list of them at shutdown / reboot time gets
longer and longer as the session length since the last logout / reboot
gets longer, but I guess I'm not seeing any serious repercussions from it.

I am NOT seeing the Init ID "co" respawning too fast errors on any
systems other than the AMD64 installations which had XDM as a dependency
of Xfce4. I still have no idea whether or not those errors had anything
to do with my Xfce session launch failures.

I did gather the dpkg -l information on one symptomatic AMD64 and one
asymptomatic i386 system -- and I gathered lightdm.log examples, too.
I'm doubtful that there's anything of interest here, since it looks very
much as though the systems aren't going to fail again.

Please let me know if you think the gathered information might be useful
or if you think that I should pursue the meaning of the Init ID "co"
respawning too fast messages in some way.

If, however, none of this looks as though it's going to be helpful to
anyone, I'm satisfied that something has caused an improvement in
behavior of these systems to a satisfactory level.

Thank you,
Gilbert
