Are you sure this is xfce4-mixer? Because there's nothing in the
notification area (the systray). But there's an xfce4-mixer plugin in
the panel.

So basically, when you mute a channel in xfce4-mixer (assuming it's the
right xfce4-mixer), it's in fact not muted (wether looking in alsamixer
or by hearing it)?
