i believe the word freeze is most appropriate.

thunar window is intact, i can move it around, but completely unresponsive.
i cant click on anything in it. if i try to close it, i get the

the window won't disappear (which i think should be called a crash)

if i try to close it, i get the message: "This window might be busy and is
not responding. Do you want to terminate the application?"

if i check top, i find:
