One can attempt to load one interface before the other, by adding this 
(for example)
options snd-hda-intel index=1 id="HD Intel HDMI"
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

For some reason I'm not going to figure out right now,
it Loads the HDMI interface last.

At least xfce4-mixer then will use the 'first' card.

Of course, it still has the same name, but I don't have to select the 
'second' card every time I pull the mixer up.
