That looks more like a problem in the driver or in Xorg. It might help
to have more detailed Xorg.0.log and xrandr output.

Can you confirm Xfce was the only changed thing in that upgrade round?

I'm just assuming it gives the same “Configure CRTC 0 failed” error,
actually.
