I think it might help to have LightDM logs from both attemps
(/var/log/lightdm/*) as well as the .xsession-errors for both.

Also, can the second user login correctly at all? I mean, is it user switching
which is broken (with any second user) or is any login broken with that (and
testldm) user?

I'm not too sure what change is relevant here. Can you
update /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/01_debian.conf and replace the line
[SeatDefaults] by the line [Seat:*] ? (I don't think it'd change anything
because the previous name should still be working, but just in case).
