I was able to fix the problem by installing gvfs. This means the missing
dependency is either gvfs itself, or one of the following packages that
was pulled in indirectly:

$ sudo apt install gvfs
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
The following additional packages will be installed:
  gvfs-common gvfs-daemons gvfs-libs libatasmart4 libudisks2-0 parted
  udisks2
