I would suggest to add a autopkgtest script to verify if the compiled
programs work, and call it at the end of the build to verify that the
generated binaries work.  It would make sure the build fail if the
binaries do not work.  It would also make sure we get continous
integration status for the package.

When the powerpc / big endian builds fail after this, we can ask the
ftpmasters to drop the binaries and ask upstream or the architecture
porters to address the issue, and know that the built binaries work.

How hard would it be to test for this error?
