It could be something like:

[po4a_langs] fr es it de
[po4a_paths] po/document.pot $lang:po/$lang.po
[type: docbook] en/index.xml $lang:$lang/index.xml
[type: docbook] en/chapter1.xml $lang:$lang/chapter1.xml
...

This example supposes that the original language is english. Hope it
