Initial Comment:
I found little bug in po4a script. When po4a try update splitted po-files it had follow bug:

po4a ~/po4a.cfg --verbose
Splitted mode, creating a temporary POT.
 (464 entries)
msgcat: po/ru/alsa-guide.xml.po: warning: Charset "CHARSET" is not a portable encoding name.
                                          Message conversion to user's charset might not work.
msgcat: po/ru/altinstall.xml.po: warning: Charset "CHARSET" is not a portable encoding name.
                                          Message conversion to user's charset might not work.
msgcat: present charset "CHARSET" is not a portable encoding name
Error: 'msgcat -o /tmp/f9OiZqSJkl-ru.po  po/ru/alsa-guide.xml.po po/ru/altinstall.xml.po po/ru/anothertest.xml.po po/ru/ati-faq.xml.po' exited with value 1

Attached patch fix (I hope :)) this.

I've applied it in the CVS repository, with a small change (I added "-l $lang" to the msginit options)
