For your information, po4a 0.40.2-1 is now in Debian instable, with a fix
backported from 0.41:
po4a-updatepo:
 * --previous flag was not passed to msgmerge

po4a 0.40.2-1 will be the version shipped in upcoming Debian Squeeze (within 10
days).
