This seems to confirm my hypothesis that too many people are reporting at
the exact same time. I tried to look at the server traffic data, but there
is not enough granularity to detect the issue.
Could you try to run (as root)
sh -x /etc/cron.daily/popularity-contest
(you might need to adjust the DAY number in
/etc/popularity-contest.conf) to see if it works ?
In that case, you can try to add in /etc/cron.daily/popularity-contest
sleep 500
just before
# keep old logs
to see whether the extra delay fix the issue.
