Hmm.  That "install" and the first letter of dpkg -l is the "selection
state" thing is it?  For marking a package with dselect as wanted, but
haven't yet done the install (or conversely not yet done a remove)?
I suppose "not-installed" or "half-configured" etc is the actual current
state to report, with or without a version number.
