i have 'expert' but even setting advanced (or removing that line and
passing --mode=advanced on the cli) doesnt show your problm

that'd be true, but i suspect is more a local configuration issue (of
some sort) - can you try on a clean/brand new chroot? maybe it's your
locale (even if en_US.UTF8 is the one i would have suggested to use)
