For me, horsemanship is being knowledgeable of and responsible for every
aspect of the horse. There are many areas we need to understand and one of
the most important is hoof care. Next time I'll discuss some other important
areas.

Western Dressage: Tack & Rider Attire

So you want to get involved in Western Dressage, but aren't sure if you have
the proper tack and attire. Not to worry! You'll be glad to know you don’t
need special tack, equipment or rider attire in order to show in this new
discipline.

Julie Goodnight takes on topics you want to know more about in her online
training library-part of her ever-expanding Horse Master Academy
(http://signin.juliegoodnight.com

Here she talks about the difference in riding without a bit and riding
without the bridle-the two require much different training levels from your
horse. For more thoughts from Julie, watch her Horse Master TV show each
Monday and Saturday night on FamilyNet and RFD-TV (now with an added time at
2:30 pm ET on RFD-TV!).

When I was a young rider, it did not take me long to learn that if I wanted
to participate in the sport of riding, I had to learn to become a good rider.
I was in the dressage saddle learning this. Learning to become a good rider
was not only necessary in the dressage saddle but is required in any saddle
on any breed of horse. As a young rider I felt so fortunate to learn dressage
because it was a new discipline in the U.S. at the time. I recognized that I
rode NO differently in the dressage saddle than I did in a western saddle or
hunt saddle.

You have been working with your horse on the ground getting her used to the
equipment (bridle, bit, blanket, saddle), and now its time to take that first
ride. The purpose of the first two or three rides is to get your horse
comfortable with you on her back. You must focus on translating the ground
exercises you have already taught into under-saddle cues. If you have been
consistent in your cues, you will see that the horse is responsive and easy
under saddle, even in the first few rides. Don't be too demanding, just let
her begin to understand your cues to guide her. You may look and feel like
you are all over the place but if you stay focused with a game plan and
picture your horse guiding correctly, your horse will improve.

Last fall a freak early snow storm killed thousands of livestock and horses
in South Dakota. Ranchers suffered a tremendous monetary loss of prized
livestock and horses. More recently in Kentucky, eight horses were killed in
a fire, four of which were yearlings slated for the Keeneland September sale.
Three of the four were uninsured. The financial impact of casualties is
significant in that it wipes out potential sales income, and sets back
breeding, racing and showing efforts, not to mention the personal trauma of
the tragedy.
