So the solution right now goes through patching unicode_* or the
scripts which call it.
Lemsx1 noted out yesterday to me that patching unicode_* from splashy
has the side effect that when unicode_* is updated/reinstalled, the
patch will be lost without noticing, leaving a system which will be
blocked during bootup (for 2 minutes, until splashy timesout).
Instead, patching the scripts which use unicode_* has the advantage
that those in /etc/initd./, which are the ones who splashy cares
about, will never be overwritten (leaving them unpatched), instead the
user will be prompted to replace or view the differences, since they
are in /etc.
The best approach, however, would be that the unicode_* maintainers
patched or fixed the scripts themselves. Then splashy could just
conflict against unicode_* versions previous to X so it is never
installed on those systems.
To get the official unicode_* scripts patched, the straight way is to
mail the maintainters directly. However I doubt they'd help any bit. I
have found some project, the Utnubu Team (
http://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2005/07/msg00165.html ), who's
aim is to port Ubuntu patches into Debian by contacting with the
appropiate package maintainers. I think we should first mail the
maintainers ourselfs and, if ignored, then ask the untubu team as a
force of pressure.
