I think the version in etch has the same problems, but unstable has a
newer splashy (which fixes some bugs).

Just set ENABLE_INITRAMFS=1 in /etc/default/splashy and
'update-initramfs -u'. Note that 'initramfs stuff' just means starting
splashy from initramfs, nothing more.
