Did some more testing.
Forget the vga= parameter, my guess about that was wrong. It is actually
something different:
If I use kdm as login manager (S99kdm), the problem is gone.
The corruption only occurs with gdm, which starts at S21.
So it's the interaction between splashy and gdm, which is at fault here.
Maybe splashy is simply stopped to late.
