Please, let's explore it a bit more.

I think that PNG are better since:

 - they properly supports alpha channel
 - 16bits of colors

I've done a test here, using our internal theme for it.

Our artwork is done on 1024x768 image and here goes what we got:

I didn't find any regression. Maybe other files it differs.
