A similar change has probably be done to /etc/init.d/splashy, as it only
enables if both the splash and the vga kernel command line options are
present. Again removing the check completely, the splash screen comes
up, but the bar das not advance (Connection refused again).

The error messages are "Connection refused" and "splashy_start_splashy
error: -10" or similar. Not sure how to debug that.
