Vanilla 2.6.17 kernel with -mm1 patch was built by me with kernel-package
version 10.049 (make-kpkg --initrd kernel-image). While installing such 
kernel image i get following error messages:

Setting up linux-image-2.6.17-mm1 (2.6.17-mm1-10.00.Custom) ...
Running depmod.
Finding valid ramdisk creators.
Using mkinitrd.yaird to build the ramdisk.
yaird error: bad value in /boot/config-2.6.17-mm1: CONFIG_DEFCONFIG_LIST="/lib/modules/$UNAME_RELEASE/.config" (fatal)
mkinitrd.yaird failed to create initrd image.
Failed to create initrd image.
