It sure can't hurt to help do some packaging.

On the other hand - it may not help either: Some consider teamwork too
difficult to judge as part of the new-maintainer process. Personally I
find that weird (teamwork should be encouraged rather than
discouraged!) but that's the status of things. Just so that you are
aware when applying for becoming an official Debian developer.
