Jörg is responsible for the code in question, so I suspect that he
will comment later today when he comes in from work.

I would be interested whether you use plain passwords, NIS, LDAP or
other schemes, and what's the output of
perl -e 'print join(":",getgrgid(1002)) || print "undefined\n"'

You could also add some debug output to the code starting line 409 to
find out how $new_gid is determined.
