20 years ago I used my first ledger under MS-DOS. It was very primitive 
and only supported a basic ("atomic") double-entry transaction, like 
well known from hand-written on paper:

document-ID, date, debit-account, credit-account, amount

Such a system would still be usable, but it would not be "state of the 
art", i.e. supporting more complex transactions (like invoice) in a 
convenient way.
