There is no "if": Generally suppressing recommends creates *broken* 
systems!

The proper way to mix multiple desktops in a non-bloated way is to avoid 
the metapackages for the various desktops and instead install the 
underlying real packages.

If a non-meta package recommends rather than suggests stuff that really 
is not needed in "most but not all usecases" then file a bugreport 
against that package, kindly requesting to relax the relationship!

We *never* need to care about generally suppressing recommends: It 
causes broken systems, and anyone experiencing a bug in such system will 
have a hard time reporting bugs in Debian.  Just don't!
