That's the only difference between "plain" and "directory".  It's
documented in schroot.conf(5):

   Plain and directory chroots
       Chroots of type ‘plain’ or ‘directory’ are directories
       accessible in the filesystem.  The two types are equivalent
       except for the fact that if run-setup-scripts is set to ‘true’
       for ‘plain’ chroots, filesystem mounting is disabled.

The only reason for the two types is that "plain" gives you the option
to set up the mounting yourself in /etc/fstab.  This is so that you
can easily make an existing chroot setup to work with schroot.  Now
that mounting is user-configurable with FSTAB=fstab-file in the
script-config file, "plain" could probably be just "directory" with
FSTAB=""; there's no other difference between them.


I'll make sure the patch I attached in the previous mail goes into the
next schroot release.  This will make sure you get sensible error
messages if there are mistakes in the configuration.
