You might already have all the tools needed: I have read about restoring
partition tables from whole-disk images as well as using a simple
command to dump the partition table. When I searched for it now, I found
http://linuxpoison.blogspot.tw/2008/02/howto-take-backup-of-partition-table.html
That page suggests you to use # sfdisk -d /dev/sdX to backup a partition
table which could then be restored with sfdisk again. However, I have
never tried that.
