[Dbconfig-common-devel] 1.8.14 to unstable, developing test framework

hey folks,

i've just sent 1.8.14 on it's way to unstable. nothing big, just
a bunch of code cleanup and a couple new features (changelog
has the details of course). let me know if i broke anything :)

on a related note, i'm realizing that more and more of my development
time on this is being spent simply testing that what i've added hasn't
broken what's previously in place. while the recent code cleanup will
help this somewhat, i't becoming very clear that some automated testsuite
code would be very useful.

basically it'd be nice to at the very least do:

- install each example package in a chroot using defaults and a
noninteractive frontend, then verify stuff is set up appropriately.
- test the upgradable package
- test reconfiguring all packages (with new options set in config file)
- test removing all package (with purge database option selected)

and ideally:

- install/verify example packages using "remote host" configurations,
both from pre-installed config files and by preseeding the debconf
  responses before installing the package
- ... ?

but of course::

- i don't have a whole lot of experience with various existing
testsuites, and am not sure if any would be able to do this
at all, or if i'd be better off just writing a shell script
  myself.
- i don't have a whole lot of time, so if any of you have ideas
and/or experience you'd like to share, it'd save me some research.
- help would be appreciated :)
