Yeah, that's weird.

But looking at it, I get confused with all the patches in the various bug
reports at this point, some of which are apparently needed for that
translation.

I assume you have all of these as a local git branch.  Can you publish it
somewhere (rebased against current master, preferably), so I can just look at
them using git?
