A question for Enrico and/or Erich: how can I
best help in this respect? Having spent
hundreds upon hundreds of hours tagging
packages, one package at a time, I have now
tagged 14,000 of them. But because I started
tagging them in March 2002 before there was a
debtags, the 14,000 tags remain outside the
debtags system.
With 100 percent of woody and 75 percent of
sarge-over-woody now at least preliminarily
tagged, one feels reluctant not to finish the
job within the existing debram system. One does
not want to be distracted so near the finish!
But the main goal is to make the debtags fully
useful, which means that we need thousands of
actual packages tagged.
I have 14,000 actual packages tagged now. I
mean to add another hundred today and probably
another hundred tomorrow, with more next week
and the following week as time permits. These
are no low-quality proof-of-concept tags
generated heuristically by some script; these
are actual editorial, human-assigned tags,
attached one by one through personal
package-control-file review. Since I am in fact
spending the hours required to do this, I would
like to be as helpful as is possible in the
common effort. (Also, in the long course of
tagging the packages one by one, several useful,
non-obvious implementation ideas have occurred
to me, some of which are admittedly unrealizable
within the existing debram system---but just
throwing these ideas out on the list is not a
very useful activity, is it? One who has ideas
should be prepared to write the code to
implement them, yet right now I am busy just
tagging packages. Besides, Enrico and Erich are
better coders than I am anyway.)
I would help if I could. The debtags are a very
important project which demands completion.
What would you suggest that I do?
