Hi,

about the proposal to try with RIP Linux:

When it is up, login as "root".
No password is needed.

A burn attempt with dummy data could be:

  dd if=/dev/zero bs=2048 count=10000 | \
  cdrecord dev=/dev/sr0 -v -tao -

which will bring 20 MB of zeros onto media
... hopefully.
(The argument "-" is important. It tells cdrecord
 to read from standard input.)
