<h1>Sponsorship</h1>

To be able to plan and budget for this we ask people who need travel support to
tell us as early as possible. This is done so that we might take advance of
the cheaper flight prices and special offers that can be found.
<br />
<ul><li>Are you interested in attending DebConf6, but can't afford the
entire trip? </li>
<li>
Are you working on any aspect of Debian?
</li>
</ul>
If so, please register at

<a href='https://www.debconf.org/comas/attendees/new'
title='Registartion link'>https://www.debconf.org/comas/attendees/new</a> and make sure you tag
the "Yes" radio button to the question "Will you require travel
sponsorship?".
<br /><br />
Please ensure you specify:
<ul>
<li>the area you work on within Debian</li>
<li>the approximate travel costs, if booked well in advance
(accomodation and food is taken care of)
</li>
<li>how much of those costs are you able to pay yourself
</li>
<li>your contact information (phone required)</li>
</ul>
We, the DebConf6 organizers together with the DPL, will apply some common sense
and fuzzy-logic filters and match the incoming requests against our vague idea
of how the budget will look like and come back to you for further planning and
information before February 17th 2006 (11 Weeks ahead of debcamp).
<br /><br />
We will try to handle this process in a semi-open way. It will be kept private
to some extent as many people are not comfortable about sharing travel dates
and intentions publicly and might feel that their financial make up is a
private issue.
<br /><br />
The decisions about sponsorship won't be drawn by lot or decided on arbitrarily
but according to our general consensus.

<h1>Call for papers</h1>

<h2>Call for Papers and Presentations Debconf 6 Oaxtepec, Mexico</h2>

The annual Debconf conference is a technical and social forum
for Debian developers, sponsors, affiliates, and friends. It
allows various groups within Debian a chance to come together and
network.<br>

We invite you to submit a proposal to present a technical paper,
panel discussion or tutorial, or to host a meeting (BoFS, or
Birds of a Feather Session).

<h3>Step 1. Submit Proposal</h3>

The proposal lets us know in advance what sort of talks we will
have. This helps us in attracting developers and potential
sponsors to the conference. <br>

Your proposal can be a rough outline, but should be at least 500
words in length (and ideally no more than 1500 words). Your
proposal should be clear about whether your proposal is political
(Free Software, dealing with traditionally marginalised groups,
etc.), technical, or social (Dealing with debian structures and
groups). It's okay to hit all three of these. <br>

Your proposal should also include some information on why you're
qualified to talk about this. Ideally it will also include links
to posts your have made to Debian mailing lists. A presentation
is not the best place to mention your idea for the first time.
<br>

Proposals will be accepted until December 6th 2005, 23h59 UTC.
<br>

To submit your proposal, go to
<a href="https://www.debconf.org/comas/attendees/new">https://www.debconf.org/comas/attendees/new</a>
and register as an attendee. Once you are registered, there is a
"Submit a proposal" link. You will see your proposal on the site.
You can choose between different presentation types. If you are unsure what
type you should use, please read <a href="presentation-types.html">our
definitions</a> first.
If it's not there for some reason, please tell us right away!

<h3>Step 2. Committee Review</h3>

The review committee for this year consists of Meike Reichle, Alexander Schmehl,
Andreas Schuldei and Joerg Jaspert. <br>

This committee will make its decision by December 20th. If you
aren't available between December 7th and December 20th for
questions, please let us know your schedule. All correspondence
will be done by email.

<h3>Step 3. Paper Submission</h3>

Like last year, we are asking for papers to be submitted along
with the presentations. The goal is to provide written
information along with transcripts of the sessions for later
viewing. Having written papers in advance will allow us to get
translations done, to help non-native-English speakers feel more
comfortable with the topics presented. <br>

Papers are due by April 6th 2006, and should cover the topic in
reasonable depth (3 pages A4 text, plus pictures and diagrams).
We will use LaTeX to typeset the proceedings. Please submit your
paper formatted in LaTeX. Should you be unfamiliar with LaTeX
earlier submission in plain text is also fine.

<h3>Step 4. Live Presentation</h3>

Presentations are either 45 minutes or 90 minutes in length. 90
minute presentations have a break in the middle and should
include workshop items that directly involve the participants.

If using slides, please consider that your audience will consist
of people who use free software, and your choice of application
to prepare and display the slides should reflect this if at all
possible.

<h2>Fine Print Publication Rights</h2>

Debconf requires non-exclusive publication rights to papers,
presentations, and any additional handouts or audio/visual
materials used in conjunction with the presentation. The authors
have the freedom to pick a DFSG-free license for the papers
themselves and retain all copyrights.<br>

The presentations will be recorded, and may be broadcast over the
Internet. Any copies of the presentation will be made available
under a license like the MIT/X11 license.

<h2>Failure to Submit</h2>

In the event that a deadline is missed we reserve the right to
revoke any offer to present.

<h1>Presentation Types</h1>

<p>There are different types of presentations you as a speaker are free to choose
from. In order to prevent misunderstandings, here are some definitions of the different types.</p>

<p>If you are unsure what presentation type would suite your proposal best,
feel free to contact us by <a
href="mailto:debconf-team at lists.debconf.org">e-mail</a> or on irc (channel:
#debconf-team, server: irc.debian.org). We'll try to answer your question as
soon as possible.</p>

<a name="talk" />
<h2>Talk</h2>

<p>A talk is very much like a lecture. One or more speakers address the
audience, using slides or similar things to illustrate their most important points.
Although you should allow the audience to ask questions after your talk, there
isn't that much interactivity in such a session: The main task of the speaker
is to speak, the main task of the audience is to listen.</p>

<p>We reserve a time slot of 45 minutes for such a session. This includes
questions from the audience, so you shouldn't talk much more than 35 minutes,
saving 10 minutes for questions.</p>

<a name="workshop" />
<h2>Workshop</h2>

<p>A workshop is a longer session. It takes 90 minutes (preferably with a
break in between). This allows you to cover your topic more extensively than in a regular talk, and also puts some interactivity in your session: Let the audience try
out things themselves, show them more detailed examples, etc. Or to be short:
In a workshop you are allowed to do everything to prevent your audience from
falling asleep ;)</p>

<a name="roundtable" />
<h2>Round table</h2>

<p>A round table is some kind of panel discussion. You don't need to talk the whole
90 minutes yourself. Instead you moderate a discussion about your topic
with guests you invited. If you like, you may accept questions from the
audience too, but the main discussion should be between the panel's guests.</p>

<p>Note that even if you are &quot;just the moderator&quot;, you still need to
be well prepared about the topic. And please note also, that you will need to
invite the guests for your round table yourself, DebConf can't do that for you.
But you may ask us for advise on interesting and appropriate guests.</p>

<a name="bof" />
<h2>BoF</h2>

<p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BoF">BoF</a> is short for &quot;birds
of a feather flock together&quot;, and doesn't mean any more than people who share
interest in a certain topic getting together in a room and doing something ;) (usually talk or code)</p>

<p>We don't have a definite schedule for BoFs, but we think that it might be a
good idea to spend about 10 minutes with a small introduction to the topic, a
specific problem or an outline of what you would like to achieve, and use the
rest of the time to work on a solution to that, together with the audience or better with the
attendees. A BoF could be described as a short workshop without a fixed
schedule. But as said: We don't have a strict definition about what a BoF
really is...</p>

<a name="adhoc" />
<h2>AdHoc session</h2>

<p>AdHoc sessions are spontaneous sessions ... talks, workshops, get-togethers,
whatever you like. As they are spontaneous, you don't need to register them
here and now ;) We just added them to this list, to point out, that there will
be room for AdHoc sessions if you find the need for one.</p>

<p>We'll give information on how to reserve a room and announce an adhoc
session later.</p>

<h1>Call for Papers</h1>

<p>Immediately preceding <a href="/">DebConf6</a>, to be held in Oaxtepec, Morelos, Mexico, from May 14th to 22nd, 2006, and independent event called Debian Day will take place on Saturday the 13th. This event is a special day dedicated to talks with the objective of explaining to companies, local organisations, and the public in general what exactly the Debian Project is, and why it is important to support and take part in it. We invite you to submit your presentation.

<p>The goal of Debian Day is to present Debian to the local press, commercial and non-profit organissations, and to users of other GNU/Linux distributions who may be curious.

<p>The presentations should be easy to understand, very clear and concise in their content, and not require any previous knowledge from the audience.

<h2>Step 1: Sending a proposal</h2>
<p>The proposal gives us a quick overview of your talk, its aims, and the level of difficulty it presents. The proposal should not exceed 1000 words, and should be written in the language in which the talk will be presented. Spanish is preferred, but English is acceptable as we expect to have simultaneous translation on-site.) If the proposal is not clear enough, the committee will contact you to ask for more information.

<p>You are also required to include a short paragraph explaining why you are the right person to talk about this topic. If the talk is about using Debian in a specific context, please don't forget to tell us what work you do or have done in this context.

<p>We are particularly interested in talks that include and explain the following topics: the freedoms of Free Software, the Debian policy, the Debian social contract, the Debian project, or other Debian-related topics, including (but by no means limited to!) how to contribute to the project.

<p>The deadline for submitting proposals is 23.59 UTC on the 22nd of February 2006.

<p>In order to submit your proposal, register yourself on http://www.debconf.org/debday-comas/ and then choose the option "Send a proposal".
<h2>Step 2: Revision comitee</h2>

<p>The revision committee is comprised of the Debian Day organisation team, and has the duty of choosing the talks.

<p>You will be informed of the result by email, and it will be published on the website on 10th March 2006.

<h2>Step 3: Submitting materials</h2>

<p>You should send an abstract of the talk and a recent photograph of the speaker along with the presentation, so that all these can be published on the website.

<p>The abstract can be submitted in LaTeX or in plain text using the UTF-8 character set.

<p>The materials' licensing terms should permit publication on the Debian Day website.

<p>The deadline for submitting materials is 23:59 UTC on the 22nd of March 2006. Please submit materials by e-mail to debconf6-localteam at lists.debconf.org

<h2>Step 4: Giving the presentation</h2>
<p>Each presentation is allotted 45 minutes for the body of the talk and an additional 10 minutes for interaction with the public, including questions. Once those 55 minutes are used up, no additional time will be given.

<p>Speakers who do not own a laptop should send any files necessary for the presentation to the organisers beforehand, along with the presentation itself. The files should be in a format that can be opened by an application available in Debian Sarge.

<h2>Contact information and further comments</h2>
<p>If you have any further questions or comments about Debian Day, please send them to debconf6-localteam at lists.debconf.org.

<h1>What is DebianDay</h1>
Just one day before the start of the Debconf, May 13th 2006, Debian Day will
take place. It's a whole day filled with presentations on topics of general
interest, for decision makers and for ordinary people who want to learn more about
<a href='http://www.debian.org' title='Debian Project'>Debian</a> and Free Software.
<br /><br />
No previous knowledge of Debian or Linux is required to attend Debian Day. We will
explain what exactly is the Debian Project and why it is important to support it
and become a part of it.
<br /><br />
The goal of Debian Day is bringing Debian to the press, to entrepreneurs, non-profit
organizations, LUGs and even curious people in general. After the talks we will be
holding an informal meeting for all of those that want to learn even more about the
engaging world of Debian.
<br /><br />
See you all there!
<br /><br />

<h2>Location:</h2>

<h1>What is Debconf?</h1>
<h2>Debian Conference</h2>

Debian Conference is the annual Debian developers meeting, an
event filled with coding parties, discussions and workshops - all
of them highly technical in nature. It will be held in Oaxtepec,
Mexico, from May 14th to May 22nd 2006. <br />

Previous Debian Conferences have featured speakers from around
the world. They have also been extremely beneficial for
developing key Debian software components, including the new
Debian Installer, and for improving Debian's
internationalization.

<h2>Debian Camp</h2>

Development teams like debian-installer and debian-edu also have
the possibility of meeting beforehand for undisturbed
collaborative work.
<br />

Do not come to Debcamp for reading mail or surfing the web.
Instead prepare well for the tasks you want to work on and let
the organizers know if you and your group need special equipment
or space to work efficiently.

<h2>Debian Day</h2> Meanwhile, users, decision-makers and the
members of the press interested in discovering the benefits of
Free Software and Debian users are invited to attend Debian Day,
an open house event that will kick-off Debconf6 with
presentations of general interest, on Saturday, May 13th.

We invite you to submit a proposal to present a technical paper, panel discussion or tutorial, or to host a meeting (BoFS, or Birds of a Feather Session).

<h2>Step 1. Submit Proposal</h2> The proposal lets us know in advance what sort of talks we will have. This helps us in attracting developers and potential sponsors to the conference.
Your proposal can be a rough outline, but should be at least 500 words in length (and ideally no more than 1500 words). Your proposal should be clear about whether your proposal is political (Free Software, dealing with traditionally marginalised groups, etc.), technical, or social (Dealing with debian structures and groups). It's okay to hit all three of these.
Your proposal should also include some information on why you're qualified to talk about this. Ideally it will also include links to posts your have made to Debian mailing lists. A presentation is not the best place to mention your idea for the first time.
Proposals will be accepted until December 6th 2005, 23h59 UTC.
To submit your proposal, go to <a href='https://www.debconf.org/comas/attendees/new' title='Register link'>https://www.debconf.org/comas/attendees/new</a> and register as an attendee.
Once you are registered, there is a "Submit a proposal" link. You will see your proposal on the site. If it's not there for some reason, please tell us right away!

<h2>Step 2. Committee Review</h2> The review committee for this year consists of Alexander Schmehl, Andreas Schuldei and Joerg Jaspert.
This committee will make its decision by December 20th. If you aren't available between December 7th and December 20th for questions, please let us know your schedule. All correspondence will be done by email.

<h2>Step 3. Paper Submission</h2> Like last year, we are asking for papers to be submitted along with the presentations. The goal is to provide written information along with transcripts of the sessions for later viewing. Having written papers in advance will allow us to get translations done, to help non-native-English speakers feel more comfortable with the topics presented.
Papers are due by April 6th 2006, and should cover the topic in reasonable depth (3 pages A4 text, plus pictures and diagrams). We will use LaTeX to typeset the proceedings. Please submit your paper formatted in LaTeX. Should you be unfamiliar with LaTeX earlier submission in plain text is also fine.

<h2>Step 4. Live Presentation</h2> Presentations are either 45 minutes or 90 minutes in length. 90 minute presentations have a break in the middle and should include workshop items that directly involve the participants. If using slides, please consider that your audience will consist of people who use free software, and your choice of application to prepare and display the slides should reflect this if at all possible.

<h2>Fine Print Publication Rights</h2> Debconf requires non-exclusive publication rights to papers, presentations, and any additional handouts or audio/visual materials used in conjunction with the presentation. The authors have the freedom to pick a DFSG-free license for the papers themselves and retain all copyrights.
The presentations will be recorded, and may be broadcast over the Internet. Any copies of the presentation will be made available under a license like the MIT/X11 license.

<h2>Failure to Submit</h2> In the event that a deadline is missed we reserve the right to revoke any offer to present.

The talks that will be held during the annual Debian Developers Conference (DebConf) for 2006 have already been selected, and the <A href="http://www.debconf.org/about/talks/talks.html">preliminary list</a> is now available.

<H2>Other Proposals</H2> Although this list includes a wide variety of subjects to be treated during the conference, it does not list all the meetings that will take place, since BOFs (informal talks, or meetings) can still be submitted.<br/> To see which other subjects have been submitted, see the <A href="https://www.debconf.org/comas/general/proposals">complete list of proposals</A>.

<H2>Schedule Pending</H2> The complete schedule has not yet been announced, because a choosing system will be put in place so that attendees can elect which talks they want to attend the most and the time-table will then be arranged so that it pleases the most

<h1>Mexican Customs</h1>

Remember to do in Mexico what the Mexicans do! The following is a short list of
what is customary - and what is frowned upon, curtsy of the Mexican Tourist
Board.

<h2>Greetings:</h2>
In social settings, women and men usually greet each other with a single kiss
on the cheek, even when they first meet. Men who know each other already tend
to greet with a hug and a slap on the back. Greeting is often done by handshake
in business settings, but never in social ones.

<h2>Tipping:</h2>
Waiters in Mexico are usually tipped between 10 and 15 percent and
hotel bellhops are normally tipped 20 Pesos. Taxi drivers usually aren't
tipped, although it's customary to round the bill up. All the gas stations in
Mexico are full-service, and attendants are normally tipped between 5 and 10
pesos, depending on whether the car windows are washed while the gas tank is
being filled. Persons who help someone park, be it in a parking lot or even on
the street, expect to receive a small tip, as are grocery baggers.

<h2>Attire:</h2>
Mexicans tend to dress quite formally, both in business and social settings.
Shorts and sandals are normally frowned upon in restaurants. Khaki pants and a
polo shirt are considered casual attire. If a visitor wants to stand out less
as a foreigner, he should wear pants instead of shorts, wear solid colors
instead of prints, don leather shoes instead of sneakers, use dress socks
instead of sports socks and take off his hat.

<h2>Splitting the bill:</h2>
Mexicans dining in groups of two or three rarely split the restaurant bill
among them. Normally, people take turns treating each other or, less commonly,
split the bill evenly among the party. It is frowned upon to ask the wait staff
for individual bills, although a few chain restaurants provide them as a rule.
Mexicans are very generous with foreigners, often insisting on paying for meals
themselves. Visitors to Mexico should remember to return the favor on the next
occasion or in their home country, when the Mexican visits.

<h2>Using English:</h2>
Visitors should not assume that all Mexicans speak English, although many
people - such as students and tourism industry employees - often do. Mexicans
appreciate the effort made by a foreigner to speak Spanish, however basic.
Visitors who do not speak Spanish should always preface their questions in
English with "Hablo poco español. Habla usted inglés?" (A-blo POco espanYOL.
A-bla usTETH inGLEZ?) ("I speak very little Spanish. Do you speak English?").

<h2>Contact and personal space:</h2>
When speaking, Mexicans tend to stand closely to each other, and also tend to
touch each other more. It is not uncommon for a Mexican to touch someone on the
shoulder or arm occasionally while speaking, or to place his hand on someone's
back or shoulder while walking with him.

<h2>Haggling:</h2>
Bargaining is common in open-air markets. Visitors should offer half of the
asking price and bargain up from there. Bargaining is not used at formal
establishments.

<h1>About Oaxtepec</h1>

<a name="town"></a>
<h2>The Town</h2>
<p>Oaxtepec is a historical place that our forefathers gave the
nahuatl name "Huax-tepe-c", from Huaxin (guajes, a small pumpkin-like
plant),
tepetl (hill) and c (place), that translates to the hill where guajes
grow. In this place Moctezuma Ilhuicamina decided, in 1469, to install
a large acclimatization garden, bringing from far away places ornament
and medicinal plants, creating the first indigenous botanical garden
to which ill people from all over the Aztec Empire came to find health
in its vegetation's curative properties and in its abundant water
springs. </p>

<p>In the colonial times, and more specifically in its last part, during
the XVI to XVIII centuries, majestuous and imponent Haciendas were
built in what today is Morelos state. Augustines, Dominicans and
Franciscans that make up the "Convents Route". In this route, you can
appreciate the huge amount of art and sensibility that came from
indigenous hands and Spanish art that, bringing together efforts and
resources, consolidated the two pillars of the colonial regime: Economy
and Religion. Today, 11 of those convents have been designated
Cultural Patrimony of Mankind by UNESCO, among them Oaxtepec's Santo
Domingo de Guzm&aacute;n Ex-Convent, which got this recognition in
1995, and is recognized as the best preserved from the period.</p>

<h2>The Vacational Center IMSS Oaxtepec</h2>

<p>In Oaxtepec, Morelos, 75 minutes away from Mexico City and at 1360m
above sea level, the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS)
built Vacational Center IMSS Oaxtepec, spanning 120 hectares, a great
touristical and convention complex unique in its kind. It started
working on November 28, 1964, offering a place to rest, have fun and
adventure, putting together a nice subtropical weather with an around
the year average temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, diverse landscapes
with exuberant vegetation, archeological and colonial ruins with top
recreative and sport installations, all this adding to an excellent
lodging service that with its comfortable installations will allow you
to host 1784 people in 391 comfortable and functional rooms, and the
Camping Zone, completely renovated with capacity for 1000 tents in 9
hectares.</p>

<p>Vacactional Center IMSS Oaxtepec has as its goal to create the ideal
spaces to hold conventions, expositions and commercial and sports
fairs, set in a natural environment, having for that the best
installations and multimedia equipment.</p>

<p>It is always recommended that visitors make two copies of their
passport identification page. This will facilitate replacement if a passport is
lost or stolen. Leave one copy at home with friends or relatives. Carry the
other with you in a separate place from your passport.</p>

<h2>US/Canada</h2>

<p>The government of Mexico requires that all U.S. and Canadian
citizens present proof of citizenship and photo identification for
entry into Mexico. Citizenship documents such as a certified copy (not a simple
photocopy) of a birth certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, a Consular Report
of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Citizenship are acceptable. However,
it is recommended that travelers carry a valid passport to avoid delays or
misunderstandings. Driver's permits, voter registration cards,
affidavits and similar documents are not sufficient to prove citizenship.</p>

<p>U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling as tourists beyond the border zone
or entering Mexico by air must pay a fee to obtain a tourist card, also
known as an FM-T, available from Mexican consulates, Mexican border crossing
points, Mexican tourism offices, airports within the border zone and most
airlines serving Mexico. The fee for the tourist card is generally included in
the price of a plane ticket for travelers arriving by air.</p>

<h2>Flights</h2>
Although the closest airport in the area is the Cuernavaca airport
(CVJ) located about 31 km (19 miles) west of Oaxtepec, you will most
likely arrive via the Benito Juarez International airport (MEX)
located approximately 60 km (37 miles) north of Oaxtepec in Mexico
City.<br />
From the airport, it's easy to get to Oaxtepec by bus - We will have
several buses during the days in which most people arrive. We will
post more information on how to get there as we get nearer to
DebConf6.
<h2>Entry Requirements</h2>
Please see <a href='entryreqs.html' title='Entry requirements for Mexico'>our page</a> for more information about visa requirements.
<h2>Travel Tips</h2>
We've put together a page on <a href='tips.html'>travel tips</a> which contains useful information about travelling to Mexico, and some general tourist information.
<h2>Simple Spanish</h2>
Why not try some simple Spanish whist visiting Mexico? Here's some <a href='vocab.html' title='Simple words and phrases'>simple words and phrases</a> which may be useful.

<h1>TRAVEL TIPS </h1>

<h2>Customs</h2>
New customs declaration forms must be filled out by all incoming travelers,
domestic and foreign. The belongings of all incoming travelers (except for
diplomatic personnel) are subject to spot checks using a "traffic light"
system. The form is passed through a machine: a red light indicates possessions
will be spot-checked and a green light means a search will not be conducted.
<br />Tourists are allowed to bring in personal effects duty-free. According
to customs regulations, in addition to clothing, personal effects may include a
camera, video cassette player, personal computer, CD player, 5 DVDs, 20 music
CDs or audio cassettes, 12 rolls of unused film and a cellular phone.

<h2>Electricity</h2>
Power in Mexico runs at 127V, 60Hz and has an <a href='http://users.pandora.be/worldstandards/images/A%20plug.jpg' title='Picture of an A-type plug'>A-type plug</a> for ungrounded quipment.

<h2>Time zone</h2>
In Oaxtepec, it is UTC -6h

<h2>Religion</h2>
No official religion. 90% Roman Catholic, 6% Protestant, 4% other

<h2>Currency and Money Planning</h2>
Mexican <a href='http://www.banxico.org.mx/cMoneda/BilletesMonedas/MonedasCursoLegal/images/MonedasTipoC.GIF' title='Pictures of coins'>coins</a> come in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 centavos (cents) and 1, 2,
5, 10 and 20 pesos; bills come in denominations of<a href='http://www.banxico.org.mx/cMoneda/BilletesMonedas/BilletesCursoLegal/images/BillTipD1.GIF' title='Pictures of the smaller bills'>20, 50,</a> and <a href='http://www.banxico.org.mx/cMoneda/BilletesMonedas/BilletesCursoLegal/images/BillTipD2.GIF' title='Pictures of the larger bills'>100, 200 &amp; 500</a> pesos.
Once in Mexico, currency can be exchanged at banks or exchange houses (casas de
cambio) at the airport or in town.
<br />Currency rates can change quite substantially, although the peso
has been quite stable for some years, however, as a rough guide:<br />
1 EUR = 15 pesos<br />
1 USD = 10 pesos
<br />
<br />Acceptance of US dollars is not common, you should plan on
exchanging your money upon arrival to the country. Banks will always
exchange money for you, although they might be hard to find. If you
pay in dollars, the change will almost always given in pesos. It is
always wise to travel with at least enough pesos to cover travel for
the day, since gas stations only accept pesos, as do most market or
craft vendors. Visitors to Mexico should plan to purchase pesos ahead
of weekends and Mexican holidays, when banks will be closed. <br />
Major credit and charge cards (primarily MasterCard and Visa) are
welcome at many establishments. Some ATMs belong to Cirrus, Plus and
NYCE systems, enabling travelers to access their accounts and make
withdrawals in pesos while in Mexico. There are ATMs available in the
Oaxtepec area, but if you want to travel a bit around, don't count on
finding them outside medium-sized cities.

<h2>Telephones</h2>
Area Code: 52, dialing to Mexico; long distance code is 01. When calling to the United States and Canada, you must first dial 001. To place other international calls, dial 00, followed by the country and city codes.<br />
In Mexico, you'll find pay telephones in most cities; some are coin-operated phones and others require <a href='http://www.telmex.com/explorer/hogar/images/pi_conte_img_ladatel.jpg' title='Picture of a pre-paid card'>prepaid cards</a> that cost 30, 50 or 100 pesos and can be purchased everywhere, newsstands, mini-supermarkets, regular supermarkets, department stores, pharmacies, etc. at <a href='http://gwolf.org/data/phoo/2005_12_11/DSC04294.JPG' title='image showing different calling rates'>various rates</a>.<br />
<br />
Mobile Phone companies: Telcel, Iusacell (in spanish), Unefon (in spanish), Movistar (in spanish). Telcel and movistar appear to have GSM networks (1900mhz) while Iusacell and Unefon are cdma2000. You can use roaming (Check your own operator for pricing and roaming parteners in Mexico) or buy a prepaid SIM card that in conjunction with the correct unlocked GSM cell phone, allows you to have a Mexican cell phone number and to take advantage of the local rates without a cellular contract. The cost of a SIM card is aprox 100 pesos, rechard cards are in denominations of 100, 200, 300 and 500 pesos.

<h2>Embassies and Consular Services</h2>
There are consular offices or agencies in most main tourist and business
cities. A complete list of embassies and consulates can be found at
<a href="http://www.sre.gob.mx">www.sre.gob.mx</a>.

<h2>Health Hints</h2>
No vaccinations are normally required to enter Mexico, but please check with
your doctor. <br />Travelers should take it easy on food and alcohol
consumption the first three days after arriving in Mexico, particularly in
cities at high elevations such as Mexico City. <br />
The tap water is <b>not drinkable</b> in Mexico - you are advised to
buy bottled water or boil water for 5 minutes. <br />
Before going abroad, it is recommended that
visitors learn what medical services their health insurance will cover
overseas. If health insurance policy provides coverage outside country of
origin, it is recommended that visitors carry both their insurance policy
identity card as proof of such insurance and a claim form. Although many health
insurance companies will pay "customary and reasonable" hospital costs abroad,
very few will pay for medical evacuation back to a country of origin. Medical
evacuation can easily cost US$10,000 and up, depending on one's location and
medical condition.

<h2>Safety Tips</h2>
When traveling in Mexico, exercise the same safety precautions used traveling
anywhere in the world: carry money inside clothing, keep your eye on your
possessions at all times, don't leave valuables in plain view in vehicles,
don't be alone on empty beaches and don't purchase or use illegal drugs. Travel
on buses that run on toll highways during daylight hours. <br />Take care to
use radio-dispatched taxis. These can be found at all hotels and restaurants.
Request the number of the taxi to be dispatched. If there is any question about
a taxi requested, compare the picture on the laminated 5"x7" picture permit
(tarjeton) with the driver. If there's no picture permit, or the picture
doesn't match the driver, do not get in the taxi. At the airport and
bus stations in Mexico City, use only officially designated taxi
service for which special tickets are sold.

<h2>Telephones</h2>
Public phones marked Ladatel are the best to use for long-distance calls within
or outside Mexico. Most of these telephones require debit phone cards, which
can be purchased at newsstands or convenience stores. In addition, there are
special streetside businesses marked Caseta de Larga Distancia which are set up
for long-distance calling and are usually marked (long distance telephone
booth). Casetas will have several private booths, a clerk who makes and times
the call, directs you to a booth, and collects the money. Caseta offices
usually offer fax service, and some even offer Internet service. They are also
located at most bus stations in major tourist or business locales. <br /> Dial
090 to make a long distance call from a public phone. To dial directly within
Mexico, dial: 01 + Area Code + Phone Number. To call Mexico from the U.S. or
Canada, dial 011 + 52 + Area Code + Phone Number. <br />Phone numbers in
Mexico City have eight digits. To call a Mexican cell phone number within the
country, dial 044 + Area Code + Phone Number.

<h2>Mail Services</h2>
Courier services such as Mexpost (which is a branch of the Mexican Post
Office), Federal Express, DHL, UPS and others operate throughout Mexico. Mail
acceptance services such as Mail Boxes Etc. are also available. In addition,
Internet centers or cyber cafes are increasingly found throughout the country.

<h2>More information</h2>
For general tourism information while in Mexico, dial 078 from anywhere in the
country.
