I downloaded asus_acpi source from Asus' web page. It needed a simple
patch [1] to compile with the latest kernel (2.6.23) in Debian Unstable.

Other than that I had no problems. Are you sure modprobe is loading the
asus_acpi module you compiled and not the one that was supplied with
Debian kernel? Make sure you copied asus_acpi.ko into
/lib/modules/X/kernel/drivers/acpi where X is kernel version as reported
by "uname -r".
